This added layer of safety means that card Primary Account Numbers (PANs) – the 16-digit number on a card – is replaced with a random representational “token” accompanied by a single-use cryptogram required at the time of transaction, making the entire payload unique. Full card details are only retained by the consumer, issuer, and card network – and not by merchants and/or third-party vendors.
